When/how can I burn leaves?Outdoor burning is not allowed in the Town of Hillsborough. Residents can dispose an unlimited amount of leaves and other green wastes on their recycling day.

How are refuse rates set?Refuse rates are set by the City Council by resolution.
Each year BFI submits a rate application to Town, which is evaluated by staff with the assistance of a consultant.
The Town has a progressive rate schedule, that increases rates as the volume of waste increases.

How do I dispose of heavy trash like household appliances?Residents can haul the material to the San Carlos Transfer Station, or BFI will collect the materials as part of an on-call pick up. Residents are allowed 2 on-call pick ups annually. 330 Shoreway Drive, San Carlos, CA

What kind of trash cans can I use?Residents can use any size containers for trash cans from a 5 gallon bucket to the conventional 35 gallon trash cans. BFI can provide larger 64 or 90 gallon carts on request.
Residents are charged for refuse service on a per gallon basis. Residents can subscribe to service as low as 5 gallons, with no maximum service.

When is the garbage collection on my street?Garbage is collected every Thursday.
Hillsborough residents are provided with back-yard collection of refuse as a standard service.
Recyclable materials are collected every other week at the curb.
The refuse collection dates are posted on the Town Calendar.

My neighbor is cutting down a big tree and I am concerned that it may be a "heritage tree".During business hours, call the Building Department at 375-7411 with the neighbor's address. The staff can see if a tree removal permit has been issued or can send an inspector out to see if the tree removal is authorized. After regular business hours or on weekends, call the Police Department dispatch at 375-7470.
