 Garbage and recycling pick-up service is a franchise granted by the Town to Allied Waste (formerly Browning Ferris Industries). In general, most problems can be resolved with a phone call. If you are experiencing chronic problems please contact pw@hillsborough.net The Town's franchise requires Allied to be responsive to resident needs, and procedures are in place for the Town to fine Allied for patterns of poor customer service. Curbside Recycling The Hillsborough City Council, upon approving the voluntary curbside recycling program, declared that Town residents can place their recycling containers on the curb biweekly. Residents must take their recycling containers to the curb. Residents are encouraged to place the recycling containers at the curb no sooner than the evening prior to the pickup and to remove them as soon as possible after pickup, but no later than the evening of pickup. Collectors will take aluminum and tin cans, plastic soft drink bottles, glass jars and bottles (lids must be removed), newspaper, brown paper bags, mixed paper, corrugated card board (bundled and flat no larger that 2' x 2'), motor oil (1 gallon per week in a 1 gallon jug). Yard trimmings are also collected biweekly on the collection day. Properly designated containers must be used. Plastic bags should not be comingled with yard trimmings. They are not recyclable. Construction and Demolition Debris Hillsborough requires applicants for demolition and building permits to execute and adhere to a Waste Reduction and Recycling Plan.
