Central County Fire Department has partnered with Steelhead Brewery to assist with spreading the word on fire safety to our local restaurants. Head chef Byron Garcia has been with this main staple restaurant on California Drive for 15 years. He credits his successful restaurant to a diligent and attentive staff and says communication is always key.
Throughout our bustling downtown history, Burlingame has experienced several fires related to commercial kitchens. While many of these incidents are not large enough to draw attention throughout the community, it still has a tremendous impact on the business. Hopefully, restaurant staff and first responders are never harmed during a fire. But the time spent to repair or clean equipment and loss of business hours can cause a large financial strain.
We want to remind our friends in the business community with commercial kitchens of these important safety tips to keep your kitchen running smoothly:
Service the fixed-extinguishing system under the exhaust hood every 6 months
Keep combustible materials clear from open flame and heating equipment
Ensure large appliances are plugged directly into an outlet; do not use extension cords
Keep the cooking area free of trip hazards and unnecessary clutter
Ensure your exhaust hood and related components are cleaned on a frequent and regular basis
Ensure the appropriate portable fire extinguishers are mounted in an accessible location and currently serviced
Perform routine safety checks of equipment, electrical wiring, and fire or smoke detection systems
Ensure all employees are familiar with safety precautions and procedures during a fire
